BGA Inspector

The BGA Inspector is a sophisticated PCB analysis tool that automatically measures the size, area, volume, and voiding in each ball in a BGA. The BGA Inspector also measures voiding in the assembly of other IC packaging types, including Surface Mount, Chip Carrier, Pin Grid Arrays, Flat Packages, Small Outline, Chip-Scale, and Quad Flat No Leads (QFN) packages. Once analysis is complete, with a single click you can generate a detailed report of your BGA inspection. The BGA report is created in html format, making it easy to share results with your customers. The BGA Inspector is available as a standard app in all TruView™ X-Ray products. WISE: Wavelet Image Spectra Enhacement 

WISE, or Wavelet Image Spectra Enhancement, is a spectral decomposition technique invented by the scientists at Creative Electron to improve the quality of x-ray images in TruView™ inspection systems. The WISE algorithm doesn’t add or remove information from the image. Instead, it adjusts image parameters to optimize the way real-time x-ray image looks. This research originated as part of a contract with the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense, where a set of innovative algorithms similar to WISE were developed to process images and sounds in search of terrorist activities. ICARUS

It has been several years since we started developing image comparison algorithms for a wide range of x-ray applications. Working on a Homeland Security program, the first application of these algorithms was the automated detection of counterfeit components, where we compared x-ray images of components in reels or trays looking for lot discrepancies. Since then, we have deployed image comparison algorithms for quality control in a variety of applications. A very popular use of image comparison algorithms, for example, is with our x-ray rental and custom units, where these algorithms serve to assist operators in finding defects. Dual Energy

Operators of radiography systems have been challenged by a fundamental shortcoming of x-ray inspection: material density variation. Examples of this situation include dense electronic components (transformers, power amplifiers, etc.) mounted on boards, BGA balls, heat sinks, bones, and metal casings. The challenge is that operators have to turn down the power of their x-ray system to image the low-density materials. However, the low energy x-rays do not penetrate the high-density materials, which will not create an image (under-expose). As a result, the power of the x-ray source must be increased to expose the dense parts of the sample at the expense of over-exposing the low-density parts. With the Dual Energy App in your TruView X-Ray system this is finally no longer a problem! 

Pad Voiding

The Pad Voiding App is a critical instrument in measuring the amount of voiding between components and thermal sink pads. This App is commonly used to diagnose manufacturing problems with LEDs, IGBTs, voltage regulators, and other types of power electronics. Voids are interruptions in the thermal path between the component and the thermal pad. Any interruptions in the thermal pad cause the component to run at a higher temperature than specified. The lifespan of semiconductors is considerably shorter when running at higher temperatures, which in turn can lead to early product failures. The Pad Voiding App can also be used in NDT applications to determine porosity of materials.

3D Rendering

The Real Time 3D Rendering App is a very powerful instrument to inspect your samples in real time using an exclusive 3D rendering perspective. This gives you another way to look at the images, thus allowing for more options when looking for details or defects in your samples. For example, when looking at a ball grid array (BGA), the Real Time 3D Rendering toolbox shows you not only the top-down view, but also the ability to rotate and magnify the image within a wide selection of color pallete schemes. The 3D Rendering App helps you visualize x-ray inspection data in a whole new perspective.

Gerber Gadget

The x-ray image does not give you any design-specific information. As you move the sample, you don't know if you're looking at capacitor 12 (C12) or 120 (C120). You can't see the silkscreen, thus all references to the layout and schematics are lost in the x-ray image. This innovative app enables you to upload the PCB's Gerber files into the TruView™ software. From that point on, you can drive your inspection using the design specific information in the Gerber files. Now you can, for example, tell the system to see pin 1 of capacitor 12. It takes a click of the mouse to get you there. To make things even better, you can program a custom inspection around the board. How about looking at pin 1 of C12, pin 3 of J37, and pin 2 of U7? Now, that can be done in a matter of seconds. 

Image Map

The Image Map App is an application that allows you to use the image of the sample to navigate between locations of the board. Since you can see the silkscreen, thus all references to the layout and schematics are present in the x-ray image thru the Image Map App. From that point on, you can drive your inspection using the design specific information in the photo of the sample. Now you can, for example, tell the system to see pin 1 of capacitor 12. It takes a click of the mouse to get you there. To make things even better, you can program a custom inspection around the board. How about looking at pin 1 of C12, pin 3 of J37, and pin 2 of U7? Now, that can be done in a matter of seconds.

Custom Path

The Custom Path App allows you to "take a tour" around your sample. If you need to inspect a set of places in a PCB, for example, but don't have the Gerber files, then the Custom Path App is your best bet for a repetitive and reliable inspection. All you need to do to create an inspection program is to position the sample at the origin and click "set origin". After that you can move the sample to the other locations to be inspected using the joystick. At the points you want the system to stop, just click on "Record Position". At each step, the system records not only the xyz position of the sample, but also the voltage and current of the x-ray source. Once the custom path is recorded, you can start inspecting as many samples as needed.

Database

In most military, aerospace, and medical applications, data traceability is critical. Do you remember where the x-ray images are which you took for that important customer 6 months ago? If you are like most of us, this can be a stressful request that will require a fair amount of digging around in search of the right files. To avoid these time consuming searches for important x-ray images, the Database App keeps track of all your files. With the Database App it is very easy to organize your data by customer, PO, board type, date, or with whatever other parameter is more appropriate for your application. You can also use the bar code scanner to quickly fill out customer information. With the Database App you will never have to worry next time that customer calls asking for their data.

Wire Sweep

The deflection of wire bonds during the encapsulation of IC packaging can seriously cause wire crossover and shorting. The Wire Sweep App allows you to automatically measure the wire bond sweep. A wire sweep is defined as the distance of deflection per bond span. Lower wire sweep possesses higher sweep stiffness and thereby higher rate of semiconductor package. The results from the Wire Sweep App produce instrumental data in the design and quality control in semiconductor packaging. This data can be used in the Statistical Process Control of your manufacturing process. Other applications of the App also include measuring the attack angle of cracks for NDT applications.

Reel-to-Reel Automated Inspection

The Reel-to-Reel App meets the stringent requirements of companies looking for high quality and high throughput inspection of electronic components in tape and reel. Applications that require such automated reel-to-reel inspection include counterfeit detection and quality assurance. The Reel-to-Reel App relies on special optional hardware installed in your TruView X-Ray Inspection system. The tape with components is feed thru the system, so that a special mechanism moves the tape in between the source and sensor to take x-ray images of 100% of components in the reel.

Measurement

Ever needed to measure a feature in an x-ray image? If so, the Measurement App is the answer. With a couple of clicks of the mouse you can quickly measure the distance between any two points in the image. The Measurement App is ideal for measurements in pixels, micrometers, or mils (upon proper calibration). The measurements are displayed on the live x-ray image, and can be recorded with the image into the database. Some of the features our customers have measure include length of wire bonds, the diameter of vias, length of traces on PCB, size of bare die, width of cracks, and many other.

Annotation

The Annotation App is a very useful app to dynamically apply notes onto the live x-ray images. The Annotation App has several different tools, which include lines, arrows, rectangles, ellipses, and free hand. The Annotation App also has a text box that can be placed anywhere in the x-ray image. The app includes the ability to select the size and color of these features. The annotation applied onto a live image can be stored into the database.

Image Filters

The Image Filters App has a collection of algorithms that filter the image. These filters are very helpful to improve the interpretation of the x-ray image. The filters are applied onto the live x-ray image, so you can see the changes in caused by the different filters dynamically, as you move the sample or change the power settings of the x-ray tube. Some of the image filters currently available include pseudo-coloring, which translates the grayscale values of the x-ray image into a color palette, and inverse color, which inverses the grayscale range of the image (often used in medical x-ray imaging).

Search

How often do we save an image to never find it again? Or to only find it after a laborious search thru a myriad of folders? The Search App was designed to save you time next time you need to find that file your customer is looking for.  

Help

We understand not all of us uses the apps in the TruView App Store in a daily basis. For this reason we created the Help App, which includes videos with hands on tutorials on how to run the different apps in your TruView System. The videos provide with a quick refresher so you get the most of your TruView X-Ray Inspection System. 

Lock

The Lock App completely locks the TruView X-Ray Inspection System to any adverse changes by the operator. With the lock on, the operator can’t change the power of the x-ray tube or the settings of the x-ray image sensor. To change these settings the operator must know the correct password.

Tech Support

The Help App is very powerful to keep you trained during operation of the TruView X-Ray Inspection System. However, sometimes you need to get a hold of us. We are always happy to talk to you, and for that reason we created the Tech Support App. With this app, you can chat with us directly thru our website. Calibration

The Calibration App helps you easily calibrate the x-ray flat panel detector for the correct gain and offset files.

Settings

The Settings App is a collection of settings for the proper configuration of your TruView X-Ray Inspection System.
