The Worst – and Best – BGA Assembly. Ever.
When Bardeen, Brattain, and Shockley won the Nobel Prize in 1956 for their invention of the transistor, the device could fit on the palm of your hand. In the following decades, semiconductor companies focused on packing as many transistors as possible in the same component. The ever-increasing logic available in a single device allowed us to build ever more complex components – from single logic AND gates to full-featured DSP and FPGAs. This complexity drove the increase in the number of pins needed to interface with the device. Since the pins were placed in the periphery of the component, components got larger while pins got smaller. So much so that by late 1970’s we had run out of real estate on the sides of the components to place pins. This was a major roadblock to the industry as it stifled the growth in complexity of electronic components. This problem was solved by Motorola in the early 1980’s when they introduced the ball grid array (BGA) to the market. The revolutionary BGA package opened up the area on the bottom of the component to place pins – now called balls. The era of bottom-terminated components (BTC) had begun. And so had begun the nightmares for engineers since they could no longer see the pins on the PCB.

To help you with these nightmares, our team has been developing BTC X-ray inspection solutions for over 15 years. During this time, we’ve deployed several generations of the TruView™ X-ray inspection system as technology evolves to meet the requirements of the surface mount technology (SMT) industry. We focus on high mix/low volume SMT contract manufacturers and OEMs of all sizes. We’ve worked with several customers through their growth trajectory – from a single SMT line and a manual X-ray machine to multiple SMT lines and a fully automated TruView™ system. We develop and manufacture our machines in San Marcos, CA. That includes all the software in your TruView™. We work closely with our customers to make sure our software tools are easy to use by both operators and engineers. Not all SMT companies are the same, so we work hard to deliver the right solution to solve your problems today – but with a vision to scale your X-ray capabilities as your company and needs grow. That means we make it easy for you if all you need is a quick X-ray of a component on a new board. Our software is also easy to use if you need a BGA checked for voids in the solder balls or a QFN inspected for voids in the center pad. If you need to run an automated inspection in hundreds or thousands of boards, TruView™ has a special set of tools to make it easy to program the inspection – and even easier for operators to run it. That’s why our customers are startups and Fortune 100 companies. That’s we need to talk about your next X-ray machine.
