X-Ray Tube Price and Performance: The 3 Key Parameters

When selecting an X-ray tube for your machine, price and performance depend on three critical parameters: spot size, focus-to-object distance (FOD), and power. In this post, we’ll explain how each factor impacts the cost and capabilities of an X-ray tube, helping you make informed decisions.

1. Spot Size

The spot size refers to the tiny area on the target where X-rays are generated. Smaller spot sizes create sharper, more precise X-ray beams, leading to better image resolution.

  • Microfocus Tubes: These have exceptionally small spot sizes and produce crisp, high-quality images. However, they are significantly more expensive.
  • Tradeoff: Larger spot sizes reduce cost but result in lower image clarity.

2. Focus-to-Object Distance (FOD)

FOD measures the distance between the X-ray source’s target and the window where X-rays exit. Smaller FOD values enable higher magnification, which improves inspection detail.

  • Impact on Magnification: A shorter FOD reduces the distance between the source and the sample, increasing magnification.
  • Design Limitations: Physical constraints, such as the vacuum space around the target, limit how close samples can get to the source.

3. Power

The power of an X-ray tube is determined by the product of its voltage (kV) and current (mA). Higher power levels increase the tube’s capabilities:

  • Voltage (kV): Higher voltage enables better penetration through dense or thick materials.
  • Current (mA): Increased current improves illumination, producing more X-ray photons per second.

Higher power leads to enhanced performance but also raises the cost of the X-ray tube.

Balancing Price and Performance

When evaluating an X-ray tube, consider these three parameters:

  1. Spot Size: Smaller spot sizes deliver sharper images but cost more.
  2. Focus-to-Object Distance (FOD): Shorter distances allow higher magnification but increase expenses.
  3. Power: Higher power improves penetration and illumination, but also raises costs.

By balancing these factors, you can choose the right X-ray tube for your application and budget.
